Details
Made in the Lippan tradition of Kutch, Gujarat, where artisans press natural clay into geometric forms and embed hand-cut mirror fragments into the wet mud surface. Lippan work originated in the communities of the Kutch desert, where mud-and-mirror decoration covered the interior walls of homes, catching and multiplying the limited light of oil lamps. Blue pigment, geometric relief, and a field of mirror that catches fire when lit from within.
Lippan mud art belongs to the communities of Kutch, Gujarat, a region defined by its white salt desert and its artisans, who have decorated their homes with mud-and-mirror work for generations. The technique involves pressing natural clay into geometric patterns and setting hand-cut mirrors into the wet surface before it dries. The result is a surface that holds still in daylight and multiplies in lamplight.
This handcrafted tea light holder brings that tradition into a small functional form. Set a candle inside and the mirrors catch the flame and scatter it, a dozen small points of light from one source, across the walls of any room. Blue and white, it reads as coastal and grounded at once.
