Details

Kerala mural painting is one of India's oldest continuous visual traditions, found on temple walls across Kerala, the style is defined by its rich earth pigments, intricate line work, and strict iconographic conventions governing every detail of a figure's pose, color, and ornament. This print of Ganesha was created in collaboration with Prince Thonnakkal, a mural artist trained in the traditional Kerala method. He holds a palm-leaf umbrella. The maroon and green palette is unmistakably Kerala.

The murals of Kerala's temples are among the most formally demanding works in Indian visual history, every proportion, every gesture, every color carries codified meaning built up over centuries of devotional practice. This print adapts that tradition for paper, created with Kerala-based mural artist Prince Thonnakkal, who trained in the conventional methods and has carried them into contemporary collaboration.

Ganesha is seated here in a pose the mural tradition prescribes, holding a palm-leaf umbrella, a detail that reads as both specific and mythologically loaded. The greens, maroons, and blacks of the Kerala palette ground the image. Frame it in simple wood and it holds its own beside any object in the house.
