Details
Crochet lace came to the Godavari river delta in Andhra Pradesh through Irish missionaries in the 1800s. What they introduced as a skill has become, over a hundred and fifty years, the primary livelihood for nearly one lakh women artisans across the Godavari district. This cover, brick rust, off-white, a handmade crochet flap closure, is made by those hands.
The crochet tradition of the Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh is one of India's lesser-known textile inheritances: introduced by missionaries, sustained by women artisans who turned an imported technique into something entirely their own. This handcrafted rectangular cover in rust and off-white arrives with a crochet flap at the closure, not hidden or sewn shut, but featured, the way a craftsperson features what they do well.
The proportions are horizontal, suited to a bolster position on a sofa, or laid across the foot of a bed. The rust and off-white combination works against a plain white sofa, a dark linen couch, or a worn leather chair. The cotton is pure and unlined, and the artisanal crochet closure gets easier and more natural with use.
