Details
Kalighat painting emerged on the lanes outside Kolkata's Kali temple in the 19th century, where Patua scroll painters adapted their folk tradition for a new urban audience, bold outlines, flat color fills, expressive single figures. This print of Ganesha was created in collaboration with Samir Chitrakar, a Kolkata-based artist from the Patua community who has carried this tradition through decades of practice. Mustard, maroon, green, and black, the palette is unmistakably Kalighat.
Kalighat painting is a Kolkata original, a folk form that grew up outside the city's oldest temple, where Patua artists from Bengal's scroll-painting tradition began producing single figures on paper for urban buyers in the 1800s. The style is defined by its brushwork: bold, sweeping, economical. Each figure contains more feeling than detail. This Ganesha print was developed with Samir Chitrakar, whose family has worked in this tradition for generations.
Unframed and printed on paper, it is the kind of artwork that works harder than its size suggests. Frame it simply. Set it on a shelf leaning against the wall. The mustard and maroon hold their warmth across a room.
