Details

Along the rivers of Midnapore, West Bengal, madur grass is harvested by hand when it reaches the right height, then dried and woven on handlooms by artisans whose families have worked this material for generations. The powder blue and off-white of this runner comes from cotton thread woven against the natural grass, the loom creating a textile that is part field, part craft room, entirely Bengal.

Madurkathi is the art of weaving madur grass into functional textiles, placemats, runners, and floor mats, a practice centered in Midnapore district, West Bengal, where the grass grows in abundance along water edges. This runner is handwoven on a traditional loom, the dried grass interlaced with powder blue and off-white cotton thread to create a surface that is firm, lightly textured, and heat-resistant by nature of the material itself.

The powder blue reads as crisp against natural wood and as cooling against darker surfaces. Lay it the length of your table before a meal and the quality of attention it signals changes the room. The runner will soften slightly with washing; the weave structure holds.
