Details

Mandana art belongs to the women of Rajasthan's Hadoti region, geometric, auspicious, drawn on freshly plastered floors before ceremonies. Here the patterns are hand-printed onto cotton using handcrafted carved wooden blocks, in a teal that reads differently depending on whether the room catches morning or afternoon light.

Before festivals in Rajasthan's Hadoti belt, women would draw Mandana patterns on walls and floors, white chalk on red earth, elaborate geometric forms considered auspicious, marking the home as consecrated. This ritual art, practiced across generations as a form of domestic devotion, is the source of the pattern on this handmade hand-printed cotton dhurrie. The wooden blocks that carry the design were carved from those same forms.

Teal is a colour that reads blue in shade and green in sun, which means this rug works differently across the hours of a day. Against warm neutrals it has the quality of still water. Against white walls and natural wood, it reads like a garden in early summer. Place it where you will see it.
