Details
From Midnapore, in rural West Bengal, madur grass is harvested from the region's wetlands and hand-woven by artisans who have learned this craft not from courses or cooperatives, but from the household they grew up in. The blue and green here are woven in, not printed, not painted.
Woven from natural madur grass sourced from the wetlands of Midnapore, West Bengal, these mats use hand-woven cotton thread in powder blue and aqua green to create their pattern. The grass gives the mat its body; the thread gives it its colour. Together they produce something that is at once tactile, flat, and alive.
Powder blue and aqua green is a combination with the quality of river water, restful, slightly shifting depending on the light. At a table with white plates and simple food, these mats are the thing you notice when the meal is over and you look down.
