Details
Made in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh, the city on the Ganga that has been weaving for over two thousand years. Karhuwa is among its most intricate techniques, floating threads clipped from the reverse of the fabric by hand, one by one, to produce the cutwork that defines this panel. Teal: the color of temple tanks in winter light.
Banaras weavers practicing the Karhuwa technique work with threads that deliberately float loose across the reverse of the loom, clipping each by hand to leave an open, lace-like cutwork through which light filters. The teal ground of this panel holds the negative space between those cut points, creating a handcrafted textile that reads differently in morning light than in the afternoon, it is never exactly the same curtain twice.
It works at a French door or large window where you want the sense of an enclosure without the weight of it. The cotton is breathable and light. The teal will not bleach out, it is woven into the warp, not applied over it.
